what the world needs: in celebration of our independence and my mum's bewtdey

"all we need is love to make the world a more peaceful place to live in," as the clicheic beauty pageant answer goes. but i believe, otherwise.

recently, i've received an email message regarding some of the topics on my blog. good thing, he identified himself as an acquianted friend at the end of the message for i thought that i am beginning to receive hate mails (naks!).
he asked me that if i (would) promote social deviances, am i not propagating criminal acts or even anarchy for that matter?
the question hit me hard and honestly, for a while i felt guilty thinking that probably in an unconscious or indirect way, i am indeed already doing it. but my defensive side never fails to surprise me.
i thought that although, illegal acts are not always immoral acts and vise versa, it could not be denied that most of these prohibitions and acceptance are anchored upon how a society establishes its morals.
morals are not universal. they are bound in-context of the culture of a particular society. therefore, social deviances like incest, homosexuality, abortion and the like maybe prohibited in one and maybe accepted in another. everything is in question of who and in whose interest were morality created.
probably you are already as lost as i am. so let's try breaking it down using one of the symposia (drinking discussions as literally defined in greek) i had with some friends.
a friend raised that, if abortion is accepted or atleast legalized and/or morally accepted, it is inevitable that the explosion of sexual diseases like AIDS or HIV may happen. such could even beat the bird flue pandemia. she even pictured an entire block holding a non-stop banging rave parties (how graphic). in which every house is competing for the record of last house banging or standing without even thinking of any additional baggage the next day.
(aside from broken hearts for some, ofcourse," i added.)
i answered, "if you'll think of it, such are sensationalized assumptions. for they will happen or already happening even without abortion, or homosexuality or incest or what not being legalized or accepted,

i believe that what the world needs is to learn how to respect free will. "

bringing out the prodigal christian in me, i rememebered one of the lessons in our cathecism class. our teacher once told us that the best gift that god gave us, next to his son, was free will. although ofcourse, we are bound to our own mistakes and it is inevitable to create one under the standards of morality again. i think that we are entitled to our own choices provided that we will not directly cross another's.
i know for some, its not easy to embrace because of various factors that they are reared and raised upon. but atleast for me that is what i think about life: living in and by your choices, learning to your mistakes and enjoying the lessons you have gained from it up until the end or if it would even stop.

tama! live and let live. we should respect other people's decision even if it does not agree with our own ideals. we all make mistakes, we all need mistakes.

- Overkill to bro. Even if abortion is legalized this would never happen.

Anyway, in my opinion, I think what the world really needs are humans who do understand their place under the sun. Many people think that homosexuality is abomination, but come to think of it, without homosexuals, population explosion is sure to come.

Ewan kung may point ba sinasabi ko.

But yeah, I think we should realize our place under the sun.

Happy Birthday pala sa mom mo. :)

i dream of a day when all people will take responsibility of their own actions, and not blame/attribute each evil/good act to a higher power who defines what is good and what is not. i believe that when that day comes many social biases will become irrelevant.

amen.

i think you got it right. respect is what we need to make the world a better place. but we could take it one step further and be more understanding of others. because respect, can be impersonal without it. once we understand someone and where they are coming from it's easier to accept and ultimately love them.

i say, if we can look for the humanity in everyone then instead of an ememy or stranger we'll see a brother instead... just a thought.

respect is a tall order for people who don't even have respect on themselves. but i agree with u. let's just respect each others choices and we surely be living in a better world.

wat do you mean by otherwise?

i think if we all end up respecting every one of each others choices no matter what they are, then nobody cares at all.

yes respect free will. but i suppose what God (or Bathala or Wakan Tanka or whatever you want to call him) meant was "you can do anything you want but I only accept good."

Hmmm... so many good issues raised here, but unfortunately, I'm not equipped to write a book-length comment.

I guess, for me, the bottom line is: free will is free will, and God (or whatever higher power people choose to believe) wants/hopes:

a) that our will is in line with His will

b) that our will does not hurt/cross another's will

c) that if we choose to go against His will, that we can learn from our mistakes and eventually find our way back on His path

odin hood: gusto ko yung last line: we all need mistakes!!! tama... parang this makes us human kasi.

mugen: hahaha. sinabi din naman yan sa socio, defending that homosexuality has sociological purpose. thus, vital and evitable in a society.

amicus: yup. but i also think that there will be more kung walang religion. because in a way this regulate those biases din eh. hypocrite nga lang!

the menace: np!

cobe: i think kasi its so hard to unbderstand others because we don't have the opportunity to know them all, thoroughly. speaking in a macro level perspective. since were talking about the world to be a better place to live in.
i actually thought of that as well but it seemed impossible to understand everyone especially if you're putting yourself into their shoe and see life in their perspective because each of us have our own socio-personal contexts and thinkings.

thetripper: *speechless* huwaaw!

mysocalledquest: tama! tama! tama! thank you!

kj: oi goodluck again. think positive!

arcir: i have to disagree. i think there is a fine line between respect and being apathetic. if you respect someone, you act upon to that respect. its being apathetic when you begin not caring at all.

"you can do anything you want but I only accept good."
-no offense to your religion. but this is so institutional. the line is created by the church itself. if this would be the line that god will tell you by the moment he hands you over free will, don't you think its wiser for "him" not to give freewill at all. because it forfeits the purpose of freewill coz immediately constrainting it.
nonetheless, i think i know where you're heading after i read nova's comment. hehehe
novasan: i think you have gracefully completed you're comment because of the third line. kudos!hehehe. thanks!

I agree! People are so close minded that is why it's already 2008 and yet we haven't colonized Mars or something.

I've always said. More and more people are becoming stupid and mediocre that one day it will be no wonder that roaches will invade the earth and make us slaves.

Julienne said...

yes nova elaborated on my comment. =)

about yung sa respect, it's the way it's being said kasi in this entry. u started with a quote about love, and then u said u believe otherwise. so just imagine its effect on me while reading the rest of the entry...parang wala nang concern basta may respect lang. what i wanted to say is that love and respect go together.
