the party
the last time i celebrated my birthday was when i was seven. i basically had all the dish i wanted: lechon, cakes, ice cream of two different flavors, spaghetti, buttered drumsticks and chocolate lollipops. it was the only birthday celebration i had, so its hard to forget. aside from the fact that i had everything the way i wanted them to be: the balloons, the games and prizes, everything. except for one, i had no guests: friends for that matter.
when we were young, we were probably the first family who lived in a condo. our place was on the top of a commercial building somewhere in caloocan. i actually have a plan of tracing and going back there someday.
we were alone on that floor. so we never had friends. when we moved in a subdivision in malabon, my mom forbade us to go outside since we were near a community. my mom, as the usual her, was always anxious that we might get into trouble if we play with other children. so i usually found myself playing with my siblings or staring outside our terrace looking at other children happily playing. when we moved to bicol when i was in highschool, it was pretty much the same. we still have no friends since our house is standing in the middle of the centro. surrounded by the town hall, basketball court, health center, church, park, multi purpose hall, and seminary. the next residential house is probably a couple of blocks away from us. so i confess, those were probably the first moments i was introduced to the word envy. see jinjin, you were not the only person who had bad childhood.
but everything changed after i went to baguio. gaining friends back then was actually a conscious effort on my part. nonetheless, the trauma of throwing a birthday party was still there until last week.
a couple of friends and i, who are celebrating our birthdays on the same month, decided to throw a party. at first, we were so enthusiastic about the idea. we even planned it almost a month in advance and we were even planning it at the mediocre's coffee shop in cubao. but at one point. jepoi and i were already having second thoughts of pushing it because of some quite complicated turn of events. but we gathered all the courage we could squeeze out and still pursued it.
then here comes, the actual date, a day before odin's actual birthday. we already had the suite reserved, two hours to do the groceries and then a couple of more hours to cook and prepare everything. we were all cramming. those were the rare times you wish for the filipino time to happen. as usual the introvert, who from what i have heard is always the first guest to arrive, arrived. then three more guests: a jumping herbivore, a doctor and a future lawyer. then everyone just followed: two came in white, from new zealand and the other one was from north pole. the entire badminton team came in as well together with a bitch. while a princess and a loverboy followed. even the supremes paid a visit. then finally, three more partygoers and a culturati catched up. this is the problem if you have friends who prefer to be anonymous. hahaha!
the party started silently. we never knew firstcomers are introverts too. no wonder i am always on time. but when the clock hit midnight, everyone just transformed radically. the wine, vodka, tequilla, gin and beer poured like raging flash flood. and people i never imagined dancing just grooved their things and made the floor happy. it was already 6 in the morning when the party ended. though we never thought that the real hardship was just about to begin. the suite was a total wreck! i was even at the point that i don't want to leave the room anymore, scared that the hotel staff would just charge for all the mess we have done.
nonetheless, we arrived home safely, penniless but with a smile on our faces. i just can't thank enough those people who came. but i am grateful to all of you for atleast erasing the trauma i had when it comes to throwing parties.
i just can't wait for next year, bring it on quarter life crisis!
ps
thanks poi and dabo for crossing out another list: enchanted kingdom!

konyo
at first, i really doubted if she really knew how to cook one or not, but who cares?! its still effing paella! and she is also half española, so i gave her the benefit of the doubt. we met on this like so-so place in up and had din-err. then we decided to spent the night at their place, good thing they were kind enuf to drop me to my place to get my pj's. i just really can't sleep without them! uh-uh! 'coz there like really uncomfortable kasi...then the next day, although we woke up pretty late na, it didn't stop us to pursue our plano!
we went to the satellite market, like this talipapa in washington and bought all the ingredients: mussels, shrimps, clams, tuna, chicken, bell peppers (red and green), green peas, onions, a whole clove of garlic, two packs of tomato paste and four packs of rice in a nearby carenderia.i was really not into going there. 'cuz its really wet and eewee tlaga! then the people are like, sweaty and all that! 'cuz i don't really cook at home. like bakit pa, if i have the entire katips as my kitchen, di ba? but its not that bad naman pala. its quite exciting actually
basically, we only spent almost 150 effing pesos each! imagine that?! and to top it all, it is good for almost 8 servings!while we were walking back home, i decided to buy spanish bread and softdrinks since i am really starving and theres no bread talk or coffee shops naman there. i approached a sari-sari store and asked for sodas. the old lady took two bottles inside the refrigerator and opened it up.
then asked, plastic?
opo, please! i answered.
then she reacted, sa tagal kong nagtitinada ngayon lang ako nasabihan ng please (for the entire time i have this store, this is the first time, i have been asked with a please).
i was surprised like no freaking way manang?!?then the old man, outside the store whom she was having a chitchat with laughed and said, mas paki kasi ang madalas gamitin nating mga Pinoy.
Oo nga, pero ewan ko, parang mas masarap pakinggan ang please siguro dahil madalas na nating naririnig ang paki kaya parang wala na lang.
well, in a way it made me smile, knowing i was able to make someone smile to complete her day. like i am such an angel talaga.when we arrived home, we allocated the tasks. then while doing my tasks i have realized that the reason paellas are that freaking expensive in restaus are not because of the ingredients they put but kasi of the time and work it takes to cook one. while i was taking off the shells of the ewwee clams, i then remembered a blogger who told me that he believes that i am a closet konyo, which i think i am really not! i immediately thought of my usual get up, consist of a plain shirt, pair of jeans and flip flops, there is no f%#%* way i am one. i don't even know if such term actually exists. but when i recall what the old woman said, it gave me a small space to ponder at.
but regardless, if i am or not, who cares? problem is, as i have said to that blogger, what matters is not other people's connotation of the word konyo is, but it is more on how you define yourself and the word in relationship to your life.
and above all, the paella was just terrific!
xoxo!

when poverty kicked me hard
i am not really a fan of fine dining. i usually get off my guard whenever i dine in to such establishments. because compare to other food establishments, fine dining usually requires too many considerations and restrictions on how you use the the exaggerated number of utensils, how you sit, how you chew, and even how you swallow it. i know, its all about dining ethiquette but there are times in which these standards, which by the way are just borrowed from other societies' standards don't really apply on our own context.

lunch talks
yes.
but what if, a person had an affair before getting married to another person and still continued the affair to the former, is it also called cheating?
it depends.
***remember allan? he is my officemate that has a boy friend, who is married and has a son.
when he opened this to us during our lunch break, one of our male officemate reacted, "home wrecker!"
no one from the group actually reacted nor contested back: a subtle way of affirming the remark. when allan realized this, he reacted, "it was not really my fault when in fact, i came in the picture first before my boyfriend actually got married."
jonathan answered,"even so. if you already knew that your boyfriend got married, you should have avoided him already. in consideration, atleast to their son."
"he just impregnated his wife by accident, than, that is why he was forced by his wife's family to marry her."
"marriage is marriage. regradless, if the marriage is a cause or a product of something else, we should still respect it."
from that point, i felt that the conversation is already beginning to create a friction. so i decided to butt in. i told jonathan, "you need to consider the condition that allan has because in the first place, he doesn't have any option for marriage. eventhough he or they wanted too, he simply can't. since there is no same sex marriage in the country."
on the other hand, i told allan that, "it is no excuse who comes first in the relationship. what matters is where the mutual decision is coming from and in consideration with the consequences and responsibilities it entail."
i added to allan, if only his boyfriend was probably there, i would have told him, "here's my phone and try calling taiwan. your hair might be being stepped on and run over by the people there right now. but seriously speaking, "make up your mind, dude! you can never have them both at the same time without hurting another person's feelings. not unless, your wife would agree to the set up that you three will share. because as of the moment, you are playing with somebody's feeling behind her back."
then all of us,became silent. we paused for a moment and then continued eating our lunch. then, i just realized how intellectual the conversation had been and i also felt that probably my officemates also freaked out with the realization. it also came to me that not all my officemates were pigs. i was lucky enough to have another set of individuals who i can strike a good conversation with. i learned that it is indeed just a matter of finding the right group in the right time and right place.
then allan spoke, "well, i just can't imagine his wife's boobs brushing on mine nor her catching my load. its just way over my imagination."everybody grossed out and "eeeewwww"-ed. then we all laughed. i even had goosebumps just imagining the picture. so jonathan just called for smoke and everybody stood up, except allan and i, and followed him. i thought, how soft stomached this guys are for losing their appetite as quick as that . but it didn't actually took allan that long to stood up and excused himself to smoke as well. when i went back to my plate to finish my meal. i found myself having difficulties finishing my meal as well. i just realized that all of us were actually having an over cookedmiso soup on the side.

when i went out the building, i saw them all laughing at me. then jonathan asked me if i were able to finish my soup? i just then smiled naively.
